Connect With Your Colleagues - Register Now!
A new school year is starting, and while your staff is preparing and planning for the challenges a new year brings, so too should your school board be connecting with colleagues from throughout the region to discuss issues that will impact your school and your board.
NASB is hosting this kick-off to the school year with an array of topics full of take-away ideas for your school’s leadership team, including: Handling community and staff complaints, doing the right thing with a tight budget, school policy, the potential actions of the Legislature, and conducting your meetings electronically.
There will be ample opportunities for networking from the beginning of registration until we adjourn from the dinner program not later than 8:15 p.m.
The fee for the 2010 NASB Area Membership Meetings is $50, which includes dinner. The fee also includes all break refreshments and cookies, and workshop materials.
The major cost of this workshop is the meal, so we must ask that cancellations be made as soon as possible if a conflict is realized. Cancellations will be subject to a $20 processing fee. No refunds for cancellations after the deadlines. See the next page for deadline dates.

It’s Easier Being Green with eMeetings — Craig Caples
In this high tech world we live in, streamlining our work is the norm, especially during tight budget times when we are expected to do more with less. Advances in technology have made it possible
to substantially reduce, or even eliminate, paper copies. During this session, you will see a demonstration of NASB’s eMeeting program and hear from the board members and administrators
who currently use the program. (Session I only).
How to Handle Community/Staff Complaints — Burma Kroger, Marcia Herring, John Spatz
Do you receive complaints from parents who are upset about a coach or teacher? Do you have community members attend board meetings demanding that something be done about a staff member? Do you find yourself secretly agreeing with community members wondering what you can do about the problem? This session will help board members deal with a community/staff complaint within your capacity as a board member. (Repeated)
School Budget Roundtables — Shawn Traudt
Hearing how others face and think about potentially significant
changes to their budgets fosters provocative discussion of ideas. Over the course of this session, scenarios will be openly discussed in small groups, with outcomes shared with the group as a whole. The environment will encourage participants
to share information, past successes and implementation experiences to develop dramatically improved solutions to traditional budgeting constraints. This session is designed to empower board members to develop action-oriented plans related to finance. (Repeated)
Help Your Policies Get Religion — Jim Luebbe
Many court cases in recent years have affected the issue of religion in the schools – from discussions in the classroom to the hosting of religious organizations and the distribution of religious materials. This will be a discussion of policy language intended to keep your district from the pitfalls of an ever-changing topic. (Repeated)
Legislative Outlook 2011 — John Bonaiuto/Brian Hale
Federal stimulus money is running out and the state is still short on revenue. We will discuss the changing face of finance, and a wide range of other issues sure to come before the 2010 Legislature.
We will also review the NASB legislative positions being forwarded by the Legislation Committee. (Session II only)
